Lonesome Blues

September 1 - 18, 2022
UNDERMAIN  THEATER

Lonesome Blues is the life and songs of the legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson: born blind, but ultimately able to express his deepest emotions through music. Discovered on a street corner in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, Texas in 1925, Jefferson made more than 80 records over the next four years, becoming one the most prolific and influential performers of his generation and propelling the growth of rhythm and blues, soul, doo-wop, rap, and hip-hop.

In August Wilson’s American classic, Troy Maxson, a former star baseball player, is excluded from the major leagues, as a Black man. He is deemed ‘too old’ by the time the Majors begins admitting Black athletes. Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his son, who now wants his own chance to become a football star, and his wife, who reevaluates their marriage when Troy comes home with a secret that changes their lives.
Set in the 1950s, it is the sixth in Wilson's ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle" — a collection of ten plays that span across decades to document African American experiences in the 20th-Century. This sensational drama was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and numerous New York Drama Critic’s and Tony awards--it is not to be missed.

At the Frasier household, preparations for Grandma’s birthday party are underway. Beverly is holding on to her sanity by a thread to ensure this party is perfect, but her sister can’t be bothered to help, her husband doesn’t seem to listen, her brother is MIA, her daughter is a teenager, and maybe nothing is what it seems. A regional premiere, Fairview is a searing examination of families, drama, family dramas, and the insidiousness of white supremacy.
