The Irma P. Hall Black Theater Awards was founded in 2015 by DFW Black Arts. Named in honor of the legendary actress Irma P. Hall, IPHBTA was created to honor the artistic excellence in performing and technical theater for companies in the Dallas Ft Worth metroplex. The IRMAS has honored over 350 artists, 150 productions and 20 theaters.
Ms. Irma P. Hall, a Texas native, is a stage and film actress. Best known for her standout role as the matriarch “Big Mama” in the film Soul Food, Hall has nearly 100 film and television credits to her name. Hall taught in the Dallas school system for twenty years until she was discovered by actor and director Raymond St. Jacques.
Hall has been nominated and has received several awards for her acting including a NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Soul Food, the prestigious Prixe du Jury from Cannes Film Festival for her performance in the The Ladykillers and an induction into the Texas Film Hall.
